Travertine vs Marble: Which Natural Stone Decor Is Right for You?

Travertine-look tissue holder on a bathroom vanity

Natural stone has taken over interiors, from trays and candle holders to side tables. The two names you will see most are travertine and marble. They look related, and they are, but they create very different moods. Here is how to choose.

What is travertine?

Travertine is a type of limestone formed around mineral springs. As the water evaporates, tiny gas bubbles leave the stone's signature small holes and pitted texture. It comes in warm, earthy tones: cream, beige, walnut and rust.

The look: soft, matte, organic and relaxed. Think Mediterranean villas, Japandi and warm minimalism.

What is marble?

Marble is a metamorphic rock: limestone transformed by heat and pressure into a denser, crystalline stone. It is known for dramatic veining, from soft grey on white (Carrara) to bold burgundy (Calacatta Viola).

The look: polished, elegant and luxurious. It suits modern, classic and glam interiors.

Travertine vs marble at a glance

Travertine Marble
Texture Porous, pitted, matte Smooth, dense, often polished
Colors Warm beiges and creams White, grey, black, green, burgundy
Pattern Subtle bands and holes Distinct veining
Style Organic, Japandi, coastal Modern, classic, glam
Sensitive to acids? Yes Yes

Durability and care

Both stones are calcium-based, so acidic liquids such as lemon juice, vinegar, wine and some cleaning sprays can etch the surface. For decor pieces like trays and holders, care is simple:

  • Wipe with a soft, damp cloth and dry straight away.
  • Avoid acidic and abrasive cleaners.
  • Use coasters under glasses (see our coaster guide).

Where each one works best

Choose travertine for bathrooms and bedrooms where you want a calm, spa-like feel. A travertine-look tissue holder is an easy, affordable way to try the look. It is made from waterproof resin, so it is ideal for humid bathrooms.

Choose marble for statement surfaces such as coffee tables, consoles and vanities. Our assorted marble trays and marble bathroom tray organize perfumes, candles and skincare while adding instant polish.

Can you mix them?

Yes. Keep a consistent color temperature: pair beige travertine with warm-toned marble, or grey marble with cool, pale travertine. Repeat each material at least twice in a room so it looks intentional.
