You do not need a new sofa to transform your living room. The right throw blanket and cushions add color, pattern and comfort in minutes, and they are easy to swap with the seasons. Here is how to get the layered, inviting look.
Step 1: Pick a hero pattern
Choose one bold pattern to lead the scheme. A graphic chevron is a great choice: it is timeless, works in modern and classic rooms, and pairs easily with solids. Our chevron throw blankets are 100% cotton and reversible, so you get two looks in one.
Step 2: Match, then contrast
Repeat your hero pattern once in a cushion so the scheme feels intentional. The matching chevron cushion cover (45 × 45 cm) ties the throw to the sofa. Then add one or two solid cushions in a color pulled from the pattern.
Step 3: Use the right cushion sizes
- Standard sofa (3-seat): two 50 cm cushions at the ends, two 45 cm in front.
- Loveseat: one 50 cm and one 45 cm per side.
- Armchair: one 45 cm cushion, or a lumbar cushion.
Use an insert about 5 cm larger than the cover for a full, plump look. Down or feather-blend inserts give the soft "karate chop" shape designers love.
Step 4: Drape the throw naturally
Avoid perfectly folded squares. Try one of these three easy drapes:
- The arm drape: fold the throw lengthwise in thirds and hang it over one arm of the sofa.
- The corner tumble: hold it from the center, drop it on a corner seat and let it fall.
- The ottoman fold: fold neatly in quarters and place it on an ottoman or the end of the bed.
Step 5: Mix textures
Combine cotton, knit, linen and velvet. Add a woven basket next to the sofa to hold extra throws: see our baskets & storage collection.
Care tips
Wash cotton throws and covers on a gentle cycle, reshape while damp and air dry to keep the weave soft. Rotate cushions weekly so they wear evenly.
